California families who depend on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will see a bit more in their grocery budgets this June.

During a time when many children are on summer break and school meals are unavailable, these additional benefits are meant to ease the financial burden on low-income families.

Understanding the Increase

SNAP provides crucial support to over 40 million Americans, helping them purchase food through a system that uses EBT cards.

With children out of school for the summer and without access to free or reduced-price lunches, families often face greater food insecurity. California’s plan to boost SNAP benefits is designed to fill this gap and ensure that children have enough to eat.

The Details You Need

An estimated 4 million children in California will automatically receive additional food benefits called "SUN Bucks" on their EBT cards. By the end of June 2025, families should receive an initial amount of $120 per child for groceries, with continuing payments of $40 every month until the fall.

Jennifer Troia, Director of the California Department of Social Services, has said that the commitment to this program has significantly helped Californian families.

In the prior year, the purchase of groceries with these funds surged, injecting nearly $500 million into local economies and supporting community businesses.

Eligibility for Extra Benefits

Families already enrolled in programs like CalFresh, the California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs), or Medi-Cal, or those whose children qualify for free or reduced-price school meals, are included in this benefit automatically. This also extends to children in foster care, and those who are experiencing homelessness or are part of migrant families.

Those not automatically enrolled have the option to apply via a school-based form or a Universal Benefits Application by September 2, 2025.

The Impact on the Community

The addition of SUN Bucks to SNAP benefits represents an essential resource for families facing food scarcity during the summer, when school-provided meals stop. With the program offering initial relief and continued support, it helps to bridge the nutritional gap for numerous children.

Financial experts emphasize that while the extra $6 per child per day might not cover all needs, it's a progressive step in the fight against hunger during summer months.

Looking Ahead

Affected families should be on the lookout for their EBT cards to arrive by late July 2025. Each family will have 122 days from the date the funds are issued to use them.

This initiative by California highlights the ongoing efforts to ensure all children have enough food to eat, especially during the challenging summer months, and sets an example for other states to contribute to the well-being of their residents.
