Did you know that in California, a special program can make your SNAP benefits (also known as food stamps) go twice as far when you buy food?

This might be news to many since over 41 million people use SNAP across the United States, and many in California might not be fully taking advantage of it.

What's CalFresh?

CalFresh is California's name for the SNAP program. It aims to help low-income families afford nutritious food every month, ensuring no one goes hungry in the state.

If you're eligible, you receive money on your EBT card during the first 10 days of the month, depending on the last number of your case.

How Do You Get Your Benefits?

Your benefits schedule goes like this:

  • If your case ends in 1: May 1.
  • 2: May 2.
  • 3: May 3.
  • And so on, until
  • 0: May 10.

Who Qualifies for CalFresh?

To qualify, you need to:

  • Live in California.
  • Have an income within the federal poverty level, taking some expenses like rent into account.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or a qualified non-citizen (like a legal permanent resident).
  • Some adults (18-52) without dependents need to meet work or training requirements, though there are exceptions through January 2027.

Double Up Food Bucks: Double Your Benefits

With CalFresh, there's an added bonus called Double Up Food Bucks. This program lets families get twice the California-grown fruits and vegetables up to $10 every visit at participating stores and markets.

Just pay with your EBT card, and for every $10 you spend on local produce, you get a $10 coupon for more fresh fruits and veggies. No extra sign-up is needed, just use your EBT at a participating place. This not only promotes healthy eating but also supports local farmers.

What Can SNAP Get You?

Depending on your household size, SNAP benefits vary:

  • 1 person household: $292
  • 2 persons: $536
  • 3 persons: $768
  • Up to 8 persons: $1,756

With Double Up Food Bucks, your money goes further, helping you bring more food home, especially beneficial during times of high inflation and economic recovery.
